This research focuses on the overpopulation of stray animals, the role of the dog in human life and studying the conditions that lead to animal abandonment in Mexico.
Therefore, based on said project, titled “From Indifference to Responsibility”, these are 5 tips to put into practice when adopting a furry friend best family pets.
KNOW HIS NEEDS BEFORE ADOPTING HIM
In a survey conducted for the aforementioned research, it was discovered that half of people who adopt a dog do not know the needs of their new pet before bringing it home.
In many cases, this leads to the abandonment of the animal, since it grows more than expected, it is not given the attention and affection it needs or the owners are not able to educate the dog.
Therefore, the authors of the project emphasize that “since there are so many breeds of dogs, it is necessary to find out about the needs that each of them may have to avoid complicated situations and abandonment.”
COMPLY WITH STERILIZATION
According to the project, sterilization is essential to eradicate animal abandonment and prevent diseases in humans and pets, so we should not be carried away by myths about sterilization.
In fact, the research mentions that: “It is important to raise awareness that myths about sterilization are the result of irresponsibility and lack of education in the population.”
Therefore, the project invites owners to ensure that their dogs are sterilized or properly sterilized as soon as possible, since this brings different benefits to the animals.
BE INFORMED
The team behind the project, formed by Joel Navarro and Emilio Sierra, students at the San Luis campus , argues that it is essential to be informed about the problems experienced in the state:
“There are approximately 20 million animals on the streets and more animals die on expressways than anywhere else,” the team mentions.
“It is important that the population is informed about this problem, and that they realize the importance of sterilization and love for animals to make a responsible adoption,” he added.
DO NOT DISCRIMINATE
The team behind the project mentions that they did a survey where they discovered that “there is a great preference for purebred dogs and for ‘pretty’ dogs .”
And they add that: “No one surveyed prefers to have a mixed breed dog over a purebred one, and many are guided by the color, breed, or appearance of the dog to decide whether to adopt it or not; That’s discrimination”.
Finally, they make the following invitation: “We must make a responsible and loving adoption, and not discriminate against the dog because of its appearance, much less in times like ours, where we seek to combat racism and discrimination.”
